Vintage Collapsible Basket
This Vintage Collapsible Basket has a red metal frame and a fabric body striped in red, navy, and yellow. The word Neisner's is stamped along the side, indicating the provenance of this vintage find. The brothers Abraham and Joseph Neisner opened their first variety store in Rochester, New York in 1911. They incorporated the company in New York in 1916, by which time they had five stores, selling merchandise from 5 cents to one dollar. The company prospered during the Depression, and by 1935, Neisner's had 103 stores in 63 cities in 16 states. Unfortunately, Neisner's fell victim to the big box trend that began in the second half of the century. Now this Vintage Collapsible Basket remains to mark the existence of one of the Northeast's great retailers.
